I'm new to salt water tanks so bear with me  Wink

My butterfly fish has developed tiny white spots on him.  What is this and what do I do to get rid of it?  He's acting find and getting good.

Is the fish in the main tank? If so do nothing. Just see if it rides it out. In most cases i've found this tobe the best method. Trying to treat only causes more stress and makes things worse. Do you have corals or other inverts in the tank?

Here's what's in my tank:
1 Butterfly (I think raccoon)
1 clown fish
1 chocolate chip starfish
1 cleaner shrimp
1 anemone (not sure what kind yet)
2 snails
and a couple hermit crabs

the spots appeared the other day but were mostly gone yesterday morning but they they were back again last night.  They seem to be almost gone again today.  My clown fish seems fine it's just affecting the butterfly fish for some reason.

Well, I think I know where your anemone went that you mention in the other thread.  A chocolate chip starfish will eat coral and anemones :(

I found my anemone! aza4
He's under a rock, I can see him under there, I just don't know when he's going come out.  My starfish has never bother him, at least not yet.  The starfish never leaves the top of the tank, he cruises around the top and reaches on leg over the top of the water.

he is under the rock to not be bothered by the star.. It will die with out lighting as for the ich if the spots are salt grain size then it will pass just turn the heat up a steady 79 to 80 tops. and in a few days it will be gone.

The anemone came out to eat last night and he stayed out.  Will all starfish bother anemones?  I've never had a problem with these two, they never even go near each other.  It it odd that my starfish never leave the top to the water?

My fish with spot is doing good, somedays the stops appear and somedyas they are gone.  He went behind a rock yesterday and was letting the cleaner fish clean him.  Is that ok?

Best thing that could happen is a cleaner cleans him. Sounds good to me.
BTW i've seen a few shrimp get eaten by anemones but not the other way round. Will be interesting to hear how they get on.

No but the only "reef safe" starfish that I'm aware of is the linkia.

White spots are gone!  banana
I turn up the temp to 80 (as suggested here) and the spots are now gone.  My anemone is happy now two, he came out of hiding and is doing great.  So far the starfish hasn't gone near the anemone but I'll keep an eye on them to make sure they keep the peace  Grin

LOL.  FW-Dip....more like a pick of Dip-$*!$ that you just want to say  xczx to (been looking for an excuse to use that smily!!)

Ya know - I was reading about the dreaded ICH on another site not to long ago where the advice included trapping the fish for a freshwater dip.  After that didn't work Hypo-Salinity was suggested...all in the name of "experiance" !   HAHAHAHA

Can you imagine dumping tens of thousands into a tank to drop the salinity due to...ugh, dare I say it?...WHITE SPOTS !    zz2

Ich is the single most misunderstood thing in a marine tank I think. All tanks have it and all tank will break out and over the last 50 yrs of messing with aquarium fish I recall what my Pop used to say when I was a child and we had F/w tanks Ich is as seasonal as the seasons LOL every spring and fall its the worse times for its appearance.. I also have made a mental not of that and it seems to still hold true . He always said its natures way of culling to old and weak every new season. before spawning and wintering I think he was correct.

The crab and shrimp didn't die from ich -- sounds like you have something else going on.  I'll let the others handle this one since I don;t know.  But in my tank - anytime a fish shows outward signs of a bacterial infection I treat my tank with Myracin II (clouded eyes, itching etc.)
